Smithereen is a universal tool for staying in touch with your friends, classmates, neighbors, and coworkers.

No algorithmic feeds. No ads. No celebrities. No influencers. No brands. Just you and people you care about. And this time, no one will take it away from you, because Smithereen is part of a decentralized social network, the fediverse.

How it works

Smithereen is server software that lets you participate in a decentralized social network, the fediverse. Just like you can send and receive email regardless of which email provider the other person uses, on the fediverse, you can connect with anyone, wherever they are.

User handles on the fediverse look like email addresses, too, for example @john@smithereen.social. Here, smithereen.social is the server where John's account lives.

Fediverse servers are completely independent from each other. Each server is run and managed by a different person or organization, who is responsible for setting the rules moderating the content. This independence makes it impossible for anyone to degrade everyone's experience, for example, by introducing ads, or charging fees for putting one's posts into the newsfeeds of a larger fraction of their own followers.
